Located slightly off the popular northern Tanzania Safari Circuit, the park lies between the meadows of Masai Steppe to the south east and the lakes of the Great Rift Valley to the north and west. Within the northern part of Tarangire is the permanent River Tarangire also known as the life-line of the park particularly in the dry season when most of the region is totally dry. This flows northwards until it exits the park in the northwestern corner to pour into Lake Burungi. There are a number of wide swamps which dry into green plains during the dry season in the south. The park which offers a less crowded safari experience and it will give us the opportunity to enjoy an authentic African feel of the Tanzania’s countryside. While in Tarangire we shall see the permanent Tarangire River which is the most dominant feature here and it’s after this river that the park was named. there are a number of large swamps that feed off some of its tributaries however, these are usually dry for most of the year but get very impassable during the rains .The Tarangire park is usually very dry, in fact drier than the Serengeti, however its vegetation is much more green especially with lots of elephant grass, vast areas with mixed acacia woodlands and some of the wonderful ribbons of the aquatic forest not to forget the giant baobab tree that can live up to 600 years storing between 300 and 900 liters of water
Day 5:Morning Game Drive in Tarangire National Park & Transfer to Lake Manyara National Park
After very early morning breakfast We shall drive around Tarangire that hosts a wildlife migration which is not as dramatic as the Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti, but receives a somewhat large number of animals. As most of this part of the country is dry, the Tarangire River remains the only source of water and consequently attracts large numbers of wildebeests, elephants, gazelles, zebras and hartebeest, buffaloes plus various predators like lions that come to drink and graze around the river banks. During the rain months of November to May, The zebras as well as large herds of wildebeests move into the north-western direction towards the Rift Valley floor amongst the large numbers of animals that spread across the large open areas of the Masaai Steppe and dispersing all the way to Lake Manyara.
Because Tarangire is manly a seasonal national park, its wildlife differ depending on the season and also considering that It is part of a bigger ecosystem. As earlier mentioned, the dry season is the best time to visit Tarangire and you we shall be able to encounter various animals. This park is home to one of the largeset elephant populations in Africa with several herds of up to 300 members per herd. In addition, there are large numbers of impalas, elands, buffaloes, giraffes, Bohor reedbuck, Coke’s hartebeest, Thompson’s gazelle, the greater and lesser kudu and on rare occasions, the unusual gerenuk and fringe –eared Oryx are also seen. A few black rhinos are also thought to be still present in this park. You will obviously see big numbers of elephants gather here as well as the wildebeests and zebras. Among the other common animals in the Tarangire are the leopards, lions, hyenas, and cheetah that seem to be popular within the southern open areas. The wild dogs are only seen once in a while and I trust we shall enjoy the finest photography safari here. The birds within the Tarangire are also quite many, there are over 545 species that have been identified here. The lake hosts a large number of pink flamingos in addition to other wildlife like hippos that dwell in the shallow part of the river. We shall enjoy the game in Lake Manyara includes plenty of elephants, wildebeests along with so many giraffes, and buffaloes. In addition, the park is also very famous for its large number of zebras, impalas, warthogs and waterbucks. On the slopes of the escarpment, we may need to search a little hard for the tinny and renowned shy kirk’s dik dik and klipspringer. The road circuit for game drives is limited and can be covered in about 3 to 4 hours where we can see the animals that are always on the move. It is therefore worth to revisit. The large number of birds found in Lake Manyara National Parks differs basing on one habitat to another. Often; we shall be able to see huge flocks of pelicans and pink flamingoes on the lake, while close to the park borders and floodplains we shall enjoy views of many egrets, stilts herons, spoonbills, stalks and other waders. The woodlands equally will reward us with great bird views thanks to the so much water around. But the more interesting species will be viewed in the evergreen forests; for example, crowned eagles, crested guinea fowl and the silvery cheeked hornbills.
Set under the magnificent of the Great Rift Valley’s steep western escarpment is a long narrow park that conserves the area between the escarpment and Lake Manyara safe. Within the vicinity of the lake are wide grassy flood plains and further as you move away, are bands of mixed acacia woodlands. Leaving that aside, patches of captivating evergreen forests, that are kept going by perennial ground water springs from the base of the escarpment are next to the escarpment.
This national park is home to a very large number of elephants which can easily be seen within the evergreen forests as well as the acacia woodlands. The high amount of ground water as well as the verdant vegetation provide adequate ground to feed these forest giants.
The Tree-Top Canopy Walk
Besides the traditional way of viewing wildlife in Lake Manyara National Park, the tree-top canopy walk offer us an opportunity to see other wildlife in yet a unique way. Walking at tree-top height you will be able to see some primates and various birds within the forest.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected area and a located 180 km west of Arusha in the Crater Highlands area of Tanzania. The area is named after Ngorongoro Crater a large volcanic caldera within the area. The conservation area is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority the main feature of the Ngorongoro Conservation Authority is the Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic crater, which formed when a large volcano exploded and collapsed on itself two to three million years ago
The 2009 Ngorongoro Wildlife Conservation Act placed new restrictions on human settlement and subsistence farming in the Crater, displacing Maasai pastoralists, most of whom had been relocated to Ngorongoro from their ancestral lands to the north when the British colonial government established Serengeti National Park in 1959.The name of the crater has an onomatopoeic origin; it was named by the Maasai pastoralists after the sound produced by the cowbell (ngoro ngoro). Based on fossil evidence found at the Olduvai Gorge, various hominid species have occupied the area for 3 million years.
Visit the Oldupai or Olduvai Gorges , situated in the plains area. It is considered to be the seat of humanity after the discovery of the earliest known specimens of the human genus, The Olduvai Gorge is a steep-sided ravine in the Great Rift Valley, which stretches along eastern Africa. Olduvai is in the eastern Serengeti Plains in northern Tanzania and is about 50 kilometers long. It lies in the rain shadow of the Ngorongoro highlands and is the driest part of the region. The gorge is named after Oldupaai the Maasai word for the wild sisal plant,
It is one of the most important prehistoric sites in the world and research there has been instrumental in furthering understanding of early human evolution. Excavation work there was pioneered by Mary and Louis Leakey in the 1950s and is continued today by their family. Some believe that millions of years ago, the site was that of a large lake, the shores of which were covered with successive deposits of volcanic ash. Around 500,000 years ago seismic activity diverted a nearby stream which began to cut down into the sediments, revealing seven main layers in the walls of the gorge. The crater has one of the densest known population of lions.
